About organictext: why it’s free

A free library of real human writing: public domain, written before AI, copied word for word.

What this is

organictext is a free library of 404 passages, poems and quotes by 79 classic writers, sorted by occasion, mood and author so you can find the right words for a card, a speech, a reading or a caption. There are no ads, no accounts and no cookies.

Why it’s free

Every passage is in the public domain. In the EU and the UK, copyright lasts until 70 years after the author dies; every author here died in 1955 or earlier, and every translation is by a translator who died that long ago too. Everything was also first published before 1930, which puts it in the public domain in the United States. That means you can copy, print, read aloud, adapt or sell these words without asking anyone. A credit is a kind gesture, not a requirement.

Written before AI

The newest text in the library was published in 1925. Every line was written by a person, long before machines could write. Nothing here is generated, paraphrased or “improved”.

Copied word for word

Each passage is taken from a Project Gutenberg edition, and every one is checked automatically against that source text before the site is published. We only tidy line-wrapping, italics markers and double hyphens. Each passage page names the book, the year, the chapter where we know it, and links to the full text so you can check it yourself. If a quote is commonly misattributed online, it isn’t here.

How to use it

  • Tap Copy on any passage, or turn on “Copy with credit” to add the author and book.
  • Tap the picture icon to make a card: an image sized for Instagram, Pinterest or Stories that you can download or share.
  • Every passage has its own page with a link you can share.
